The Minority Student Achievement Network, along with the Ann Arbor, MI Public Schools and the Farmington, MI Public Schools, invite you to attend a day-long workshop for educators built around the theme:

Accelerating Growth: Aligning Beliefs and Actions

WORKSHOP A
Engaging Minority Students in Algebra

This workshop will focus on helping students of color succeed in the gatekeeper course of Algebra. The sessions will introduce three projects designed to engage students in demonstrating and thinking about algebraic concepts and to enlist the students in helping their peers do the same. The keynote speaker will be Deborah Loewenberg Ball, Dean of the University of Michigan School of Education and co-director of the Center for Proficiency in Teaching Mathematics.

WORKSHOP B
Using Support and Press to Create a Motivating Classroom

Facilitated by Ian Smith of Learning Unlimited, this workshop will help deepen current understandings about how successful teachers motivate students, especially minority students, to take ownership of their learning and become self-motivated learners. The workshop will identify, demonstrate and evaluate practical strategies that will work for all classrooms and all students. This session will be highly interactive and participatory.
